How to manage DNS zones via WHM

How to manage DNS zones via WHM

Step 1:
Adding a DNS Zone

To add a new DNS zone, login to WHM and navigate to DNS Functions, then click on the Add a DNS Zone icon.

In this section, you can create a DNS zone for your domain. Then on the IP text box, add your IP address. Also, enter the domain in the Domain Selection section.

To see the list of available domains and users, go to the Account Selection section. If your account shows on the Account Selection section, don’t enter the domain name in the Domain text box.

Once the details are updated, click on the Add Zone button to create a DNS zone.

Step 2:
Editing DNS Zone

The next step is to edit the new DNS zone. To do so, click on the Edit DNS Zone icon then go to DNS Function. To edit the domain section in the DNS zone, select the domain name you want to use from the Choose a Zone to Edit option then click the Edit button.

In this window, you can edit any records of a DNS zone file.

Now, cPanel will display a new window requiring you to edit the DNS zone.

Note: Please check the info in each description of the zones.

  • cPanel first: This shows the version of WHM and cPanel as well as the make number.
  • Update_time: It shows the date and time since the last update was done to the zone file.
  • Cpanel::ZoneFile::VERSION: Indicates the version of the Zone fuel used in the cPanel and WHM.
  • hostname: It’s the server’s hostname.
  • Domain: Indicates the domain name.
  • latest: Shows the current versions of cPanel and WHM on the server.
  • Zone file for: Denotes the domain of the DNS zone.
  • $TTL: It indicates the default Time to Live in seconds. It shows how long it takes to cache DNS zone data.
  • TTL: The Time To Live of a DNS entry.
  • Record Type: It’s the DNS record type.
  • SOA: Indicates the Start of Authority record and contains the authoritative details.

  • A: Stands for the address record. It matches the domain name to your IP address.
  • NS: Represents Nameserver record and indicates the specific hostname used to search for the domain.
  • MX: Stand for Mail Exchanger Record and represents the list of servers that handle the domain’s mail.
  • CNAME: Stands for Canonical Name Record. It matches the domain name to a specific code name.

Once these details are updated, click on the Save button to apply the changes.

Step 3:
Deleting a DNS Zone

To delete a new DNS zone of a domain, go to the Delete a DNS Zone icon and click the DNS Function button.

To delete a DNS zone, select the domain you wish to erase from the Choose Zones to Delete option and click the Delete button. The cPanel will ask you to confirm the deletion of the DNS zone.

This step should automatically delete the DNS zone of your domain.

Step 4:
Resetting a DNS Zone

So, how do you go about resetting a DNS Zone? Let’s find out.
Go to the Reset a DNS Zone section and click DNS Function.

To reset the DNS zone, choose the domain name from the Choose a Zone to Reset section, then click the Reset button. The cPanel will ask you to confirm the reset of the DNS zone.

Conclusion

That’s it! By now you should know how to manage a new DNS zone within WHM successfully.
