How to Manage Databases Within the Plesk Webhosting Panel

Introduction

Plesk is a great tool that can allow you to manage your databases for any domain that has been added to your Plesk hosting account. You can manage PostgreSQL or MySQL databases directly using Plesk. Some database tasks like create, edit, and import and export databases can be easily managed.

This article will walk you through how to manage databases with the Plesk panel.

Prerequisite

  • Plesk Account
  • Registered domain added to Plesk panel.

Getting Started

Login to your Plesk panel using your name and password. On the left-hand side of the panel, click Databases.

Here, you will find a list of all your databases. There are three options defined below;

  • User Management – this option allows you to add or remove database users.
  • Database Servers – this option lets you add and reset servers as well as change the settings of your available servers.
  • Backup Manager- this option allows you to backup, upload, remove and schedule backups. You can configure your remote storage settings and also install the likes of Dropbox and AWS here.

Creating A Database

To add a database, click on Add Database.

  • A name
  • A related site
  • Create a database username
  • Give the user a password
  • Confirm the password

Editing Tables Using phpMyAdmin

Login to your plesk account and head over to the databases tab. You should see the databases and/or domains listed here. Click on the one you wish to edit and click phpMyAdmin.

The phpMyAdmin will allow you to create tables amongst other things such as exporting and importing settings.

This option is used whenever you want to copy the contents of the database into another database. You can select the destination database and its server and specify if you want the copy tool to copy everything.

Exporting a Dump

Click Databases then choose a database to export. Then click Export Dump.

You will be prompted to select the location the dump is going to be saved to, then select a name for the dump. Optionally you can choose to download the dump after creation.

Click OK. A small pop-up window will appear at the bottom right of your screen confirming the procedure is happening.

Importing a Dump

Choose the database you want to import to and then select Import Dump.

Here you can select upload if you opted to save the dump in offline. If you saved the file in one of your directories, you could browse for it by choosing Import and navigating to the folder where you saved the dump. In My case, I saved it at the root directory. Select the dump and click OK.

A small pop-up message at the bottom right of the screen will show you the progress of the import.

Repairing a Database

Whenever your database has lost something or it isn’t running well, click this option. It automatically checks and tries to repair any part of the database that might be having trouble.

Deleting a Database.

Navigate to the databases tab and choose the database you want to remove. Then click Remove Database.
