As a website owner and hosting expert, I have had the opportunity to test and evaluate a wide range of hosting providers over the years. DigitalOcean has constantly caught my attention so I decided to review it.
My first impression of the brand was that it’s a solid, no-frills option for those looking for a reliable and affordable cloud hosting solution. But, as I dug deeper into their services, I discovered that DigitalOcean offers much more than just a basic hosting package.
In this comprehensive review, I will share my personal experience and provide an in-depth analysis of DigitalOcean’s performance, features, customer support, and value for money. If you’re considering using their services, read on for an unbiased evaluation.
DigitalOcean Review
Founded in 2011, DigitalOcean has quickly grown to host over 2 million websites. DigitalOcean is headquartered in New York City, New York.
They offer a range of services, including managed cloud hosting, virtual machines, and storage solutions, including block storage, object storage, and distributed file systems.
However, it’s important to note that DigitalOcean is not BBB accredited and has a BBB rating of D-. Additionally, the company has a low rating on Trustpilot, with an overall rating of 2.1 out of 5 stars, based on 487 reviews. I would caution that there may be issues with customer support and satisfaction.

DigitalOcean Prices & Plans – 2023
Understanding the pricing of DigitalOcean can be tricky for some users because it uses a pay-as-you-go model, which means that the cost of hosting a website can vary depending on the amount of resources used.
Unlike the traditional hosting plans (shared, VPS, WordPress, etc) DigitalOcean offers Droplets, Kubernetes, Spaces, and Block Storage, each with different pricing structures and options which can be a little daunting for new users. It has flexible pricing plans, users can scale up or down their resources as their needs change.
DigitalOcean accepts different payment options like Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, PayPal, Google Pay, and Apple Pay and offers 60-day free usage credit of $200.
Droplets
Droplets are virtual machines that can be customized to meet your specific needs. They come in various sizes, with different amounts of RAM, CPU, and storage.

Standard and premium packages offer a great third plan that I highly recommend to website owners. It comes with 80 GB SSD storage and 4 TB bandwidth, which is perfect for your growing business.
TipTip: If you’re just starting to move your business to the cloud, DigitalOcean’s managed cloud hosting plans via Cloudways might be the perfect fit for you.
I found their 1-click apps marketplace to be the most useful and unique feature. Even though you’re dealing with cloud hosting, it’s easy to set up WordPress, cPanel, and other applications in one click.
You can also enjoy the flexibility of customizing your server settings to match your application needs, while also benefiting from exceptional cost-effectiveness and reliability.
Performance
Performance is another crucial factor to consider when choosing a web host. Three key factors are important when it comes to testing performance: speed, loading time, and uptime.
It’s important to keep in mind that overall performance and uptime are not the same. DigitalOcean guarantees a 99.99% uptime, meaning that your website will be accessible 99.99% of the time, which is the current industry standard.
On GTMetrix, the website loaded fully in 1.0 s and had an impressive 329 ms response time. The site also gave 100% performance:
Level Of Support
Phone
DigitalOcean does not currently offer phone support as a means of customer assistance which is a huge disappointment.
Email
They offer email support for general questions or issues that are not urgent.
Online ticketing
They also 24/7 via ticketing system – you can submit a support ticket for assistance with any issues you’re experiencing with their platform. They also offer a SLA for their support services, which guarantees a response time within the given time frame for critical issues.
Live chat
Live chat is only available as a premium support feature.
Community
DigitalOcean’s community is a great place to find answers to common questions and troubleshoot issues. I personally find this to be very effective in solving problems.
Documentation
DigitalOcean has a comprehensive documentation center that covers all aspects of using their platform. The documentation is organized by topic, making it easy to find the information you need.
Tutorials
DigitalOcean provides a wide variety of tutorials that cover different topics such as how to set up a LAMP stack, deploy a Node.js app, or move a website to DigitalOcean.
User-Friendliness – Easy of use
Registration
Registration process on DigitalOcean is extremely easy. Their web design is quite intuitive and you have the option to sign up with Github or Google. You can start your 60 day free-trial right away.
Just type your email and password and click on “Start my 60 day free trial”. You will be asked to validate your email before registration is completed.
DigitalOcean Control Panel
The DigitalOcean Control Panel has a user-friendly interface that allows for easy management of all aspects of your DigitalOcean account, including droplets, domains, load balancers, and more.
It provides a centralized location to monitor and control your resources, as well as perform common tasks such as creating and configuring droplets, managing backups, and setting up monitoring and alerting.
Installing WordPress on DigitalOcean
Installing WordPress on DigitalOcean is easy. You just have to install pre-configured droplets from the “One-click apps” marketplace.
Log in to your DigitalOcean account and go to the “Create” > “Create Droplets”
Now select “Get started with a Droplet” button
Add some basic information and choose a region that’s closest to your current location:
Scroll down to “Choose an image” > “OS Marketplace” and install “Wordpress”
Optionally, you can add SSH keys, backups and monitoring.
Click the “Create Droplet” button to deploy the droplet.
Once the droplet is created, you can find the server’s IP address, username and password in the droplet’s detail page.
Add an email account with DigitalOcean
DigitalOcean does not offer email accounts as part of their standard offerings. DigitalOcean primarily focuses on providing infrastructure as a service (IaaS) which includes virtual servers (Droplets), block storage, and load balancers.
If you want to use email service, you can use third-party email providers like Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Zoho Mail, etc. These providers offer email hosting services, and you can set up your custom email addresses with your domain.
Conclusion: Do We Recommend DigitalOcean?
I highly recommend DigitalOcean to anyone who wants to switch to cloud hosting. This company is well-known for its simplicity, affordability, and scalability. Like I mentioned above, it’s incredibly easy to manage and deploy resources on the cloud with DigitalOcean’s control panel. Their pricing is transparent and pay as you go, which makes it a great option for developers and small businesses who want to start small and scale as they grow.
One of the things that I find unique about DigitalOcean is that their infrastructure is built on top of SSDs which means you get fast disk I/O and network transfer. This makes it a great option for hosting web applications, databases, and other high-performance workloads.
They also have a wide range of pre-configured one-click apps for popular applications, such as WordPress, which makes it easy to deploy a new application quickly.
In terms of support, they have a robust knowledge base and tutorials that can help you to troubleshoot and resolve issues quickly. They also have a 24/7 support ticket system, which guarantees a response time of less than an hour for critical issues.
Overall, DigitalOcean is a great option for all the right reasons: they offer a user-friendly control panel, transparent pricing, and high-performance infrastructure, which makes it an ideal platform for cloud hosting.
Digital Ocean became a good choice for my businesses.
DigitalOcean became a good choice for my businesses that need a high level of security and performance. This is a good choice for businesses that need a cost-effective and easy-to-use solution. I observed one thing, DigitalOcean, DedicatedCore, and Interserver these three vps companies offer a range of security features to protect our important data. The best option for those who have security concerns
I received an email from Google saying that from a different location and device, my Gmail account was accessed. I had to change my password for security reasons. One hour later, I received an email from DigitalOcean saying that they would charge $15 from my bank account. They did when I never subscribed, and I didn’t even know about the existence of this company. As a result, I had to cancel my debit card and present a formal complaint to my bank to avoid future scams and money refunds. Don’t trust DigitalOcean, they are a scam. Now I realized that I am not the only one who experienced this with them.
When i searched for a VPS this company popped up, seeming a safe option at a first glance, i subscribed: – FIRST red flag, in the procedure of registration of your account you’ve got to pay FIRST thing for a service by card. Fine, anyway i wanted to use the service, i did it. They gathered the credit card data, but i didn’t get to the confirmation of the payment, so i thought could be a problem with my card, happens. I logged out. – Second Big RED FLAG, the day after i couldn’t log in anymore… not even to the first level registration page in order to finalize the procedure. Nothing. No email from the company. Just a message on the screen, you wanna move any step in any direction, just open a ticket. I was fed up with them, so i dropped it, till after a couple of week i see they CHARGED my card!!! Not freezed, or blocked the money, charged!!! What a scam?!?!?!? – Third final red flag, i decided to write the ticket, and i get in less than 10 seconds a detailed answer (how is it possible????). Claiming there ‘were some inconsistencies surfaced about your signup details’ and ‘ no funds are being transferred from your payment source to DigitalOcean. If there is a hold, it will be released by your card issuer in a matter of a few business days’. Really? Finally I understood – It’s a ‘pre-printed’ email, standardized answer – you get your conclusions. I can’t believe that nowadays such things still happen.
I have used Digital Ocean for more than 2 years and I regret it.
I started over the recommendation of our freelancer, but in 2 years, I always had a hard time, from setting up, to managing, to backup, and performance, everything was very hard and confusing for me. And whenever I had a problem and opened a ticket, I only received automated responses and never heard from a real person answering my messages! In the end, one of my sites was hacked because of Digital Ocean and they didn’t even bother to respond to me for anything at all!
I finally pulled the plug and changed to another hosting provider which I am happy with!
So, in short, if you are not a genius with IT, stay away from Digital Ocean. Or if you use, pray that you will not have any problems and will need technical support, because if you do, support will be nowhere to be found!
i create account on digitalocean they cut 5 $ from my card. and locked my account.
I create an account on digitalocean they cut 5 $ from my card. and locked my account. I create a support ticket but they don’t reply to my ticket. I created a ticket 10 hour ago still no Reply.
We tried to sign up the service but always failed at the adding credit card step with our corporate cards. We called the issuer, Chase & AMEX. They told us there were nothing wrong with our cards and DigitalOcean was well known for their issues. I opened a ticket with DigitalOcean and then was told our account was locked, permanently. I don’t know how they conduct their business. We have been using AWS, GCP and Oracle for many years and was trying to introduce DigitalOcean to enhance the redundancy. Unbelievable!
I will say that they have good plan prices. You will need to already know how to manage a server. If you don’t have to interact with their customer service team then it’s great.
The customer service at Digital Ocean is an unpleasant mess for the following reasons:
1. It’s inconsistent: You receive replies from different people every time in the same email thread. 2. It’s uncoordinated: You receive identical template responses from different customer service representatives in the same email thread. 3. It’s insincere: You are given offers to provide technical assistance without them following through. 4. It’s inefficient: You literally have to interact with 5 to 10 customer service representatives to answer a simple question. 5. It’s self-promoting: You receive are sent paragraphs of sales copy during your customer service request without having first received any customer service. 6. It’s questionable: You receive responses that repeatedly avoid or completely ignore answering simple questions about performance capabilities.
They deleted my server, my data base, my business without telling me because there was a balance of 24 usd!!! After 5 years being with them! By the way no need to send your reply template. Check at other bad reviews something is obviously not right with you guys and I am currently reviewing my case with my lawyer for the damage your company created by just destroying my 5 years business for a miss payment of 24 usd!!! Shame on you!
